BEES IN THE NEWS
Our efforts on this policy resolution began after a meeting of a local group called TRANSITION MEAFORD. The meeting included a screening of a film called VANISHING OF THE BEES, which documents the collapse of honeybee colonies.
At that meeting, I heard from some local beekeepers, who had been experiencing catastrophic losses over the past two growing seasons. Their stories sent us on a hunt for more information, and took us to several organizations spanning the environmental movement, to organic farmers and conventional farm federations. The news of 'what's happening to the bees' has been drawing attention here and around the globe... and it's been an enlightening adventure. We share here, then, some of the reports we uncovered and pursued in the development of a policy that we believe balances the realities of agriculture with the very real risks to the environment. We urge you to follow links to see the research behind the stories. |
